Stranger of the Month is an amateur publishing project based on novel forms of distribution and collective creativity. A service for generating instructions for the anonymous Other, Stranger of the Month takes its cue from ‘how to’ manuals, spy novels, new age self-help mantras, and minor acts of everyday subversion.

Next Wave 2008

During Next Wave Festival 2008, Stranger of the Month invites you to visit our temporary mailroom where friendly clerks will assist you in writing and distributing your chosen instruction to unsuspecting strangers via fax, post and SMS TV*.

Our office was open on Saturday 24 May from 12-8pm at Office 10, Level 3, Nicholas Building, Melbourne.

While the mail desk is now unattended, you may visit the office until Thursday 29 June during business hours, where you will still be able to create instructions, draw maps, and find out about each project.

Click here to view the location on a city map.

Stranger of the Month apologises for modifying its office hours at short notice, due to a last minute shift in circumstance.

Artists’ Instructions

Stranger of the Month includes instructions by selected artists that intervene in public and mediated space. Instructions may be contemplated as ideas alone, or alternatively, actively engage with its participants to create playful diversions in everyday life.

Stranger of the Month presents instructional projects by Rebecca Cannon, Hugh Davies, Panther, Nathalie Quagliotto, Jason Maling and Lucas Ilhein.

If you’d like to be a part of it…

Stranger of the Month invites you to contribute your instructions via our website, or by visiting our temporary mailroom (see above). Selected instructions will be distributed via fax, post and SMS TV*.

Intended as an interruption into the lives of others, the nature of the instruction can assume varied forms. Instructions may provide a remedy to the doldrums of a working life, an awakening to behaviours that are habitual or unconscious, or they could function as a call to action for the purpose of a particular cause or belief. Alternatively, instructions could operate in a more covert way, to form the beginnings of a game of deception and intrigue.

* SMS TV is an interactive messaging service that allows members of the public to post messages on the big screen at Federation Square. Please see screen guide for operating times.
